DIY Tutorial: Create Your Own Festive Table Arrangement at Home

There is something truly special about a handmade centerpiece. Whether you're hosting a grand Christmas dinner or simply want to brighten up your dining room, a round floral arrangement adds that perfect touch of elegance and warmth.

In our latest tutorial, I walk you through the step-by-step process of creating a professional-looking display using simple techniques and beautiful seasonal stems. Here is everything you need to know to recreate this look at home.

Materials for a Christmas table arrangement
Gather your bowl, floral foam, foliage, and winter stems before you start.

What You'll Need

  • A design bowl specifically shaped to hold floral foam.
  • Half a block of soaked, biodegradable floral foam.
  • A mix of eucalyptus foliage for movement and texture.
  • White Avalanche Roses and delicate spray roses for focal flowers.
  • Limonium and eryngium for texture and a wintry feel.
  • An optional candle and holder for a festive glow.

Step 1: Prep Your Base

Start with your soaked floral foam in the design bowl. Trimming the corners of the foam gives you more surface area and makes your stems much more stable. If you're using a candle, insert the holder into the centre before the greenery gets in the way.

Step 2: Establish Your Shape

Don't be intimidated by the square foam. You can cheat the round shape using your greenery by inserting four pieces of foliage at the base to set your maximum width. Angle those bottom stems slightly downward to disguise the bowl, then fill the gaps to complete the circle.

Once the shape is balanced, layer in focal blooms and finishing texture.

Step 3: Add Your Focal Flowers

For a classic, timeless look, I chose White Avalanche Roses. Aim for odd numbers and vary their heights. Because a table arrangement is viewed from every angle, keep turning the bowl as you work so it looks beautiful from all sides.

Step 4: Texture and Movement

Once your main roses are in, it's time to fill in the gaps.

  • Limonium adds a wild, airy texture.
  • Spray roses create a more dynamic, multi-layered look.
  • Eryngium brings a lovely wintry blue-grey tone.

Top Tips for Longevity

  • Buy your flowers 24 hours in advance and let them hydrate before putting them in foam.
  • If you're making this for Christmas Day, assemble it around the 20th or 21st.
  • Keep the floral foam damp and your roses should last 7 to 10 days.
